Literacy - Letter to Mum

6th February 1956

Karol Henderson
21 Traffic Rd
Ohio 1208
United States of America

Dear Mother,

I made it. We landed on the moon! It wasn’t an easy trip but this place is amazing. We landed at 7:01pm Ohio time. From lift off we exited the earth’s atmosphere and things were running smoothly, then we had an engine malfunction it was a scary experience. The moon has been fun though. We have been doing exploring and stuff and we don’t really have nice food and it’s harder to do things up here too. We have begun looking at some of the substances that are up here and have already discovered some amazing things.

My crew have all been adapting well to the conditions up here quite well. Mike has trying to fix the engine that is not really working at the moment, hope fully he can get it done in the next few weeks or our supplies will start to really get thin.

The landing was a rough one and we didn’t quite get to the spot that we wanted which is meaning we are having to travel a bit further everyday to do our research. But Mom the view from up here is amazing it’s like nothing I have ever seen before. I feel it really put in perspective about how small we are on our planet we you look at it from this far away, it kind of gives you a gage on how big our universe really is.

Anyway I hope you and Dad are fine and that everything is running smoothly on the farm. I will write another letter asap.

Love your Son

P.S. Don’t ask how I got this letter home from the moon.

Dear future colleagues of Mr Cameron

Farewell Room 9

Dear Parents / Caregivers of Room 9

It is with a heavy heart that I share the news that I will be departing Berkley next Wednesday. I am leaving Berkley in order to take up the position as PYP Coordinator in a school in Melbourne. As I prepare for my departure, I am filled with mixed emotions. I have truly enjoyed working with and getting to know each and every one of your children, and I am going to miss them dearly.

Upon my departure, Ms Jacobs will be taking my place, and I am confident that the students are being left in great hands.

Thank you for all of your involvement and support during the school year.

Wishing you all luck for your future journeys,

Matthew Cameron

Hope

Who is the man in the park? What has happened to him?

What do you think he is hoping for? What is significant about the flowers?

What colour is winter? What colour is summer?

Is there more happiness or sadness in the world?

The Prompt
The flowers gave him hope.

Sitting there in the frost-covered park, with snowflakes gently falling from the cold, October sky, he reflected upon the events of the past few days. Despite everything, he still had hope for the future.

Twinkle, twinkle, little flame

Why do the boys need the lantern?

Why are the boys out at night on their own?

What are the boys thinking about?

Where will the boys end up?

What caused the flame to go out?

Where did the lantern come from?

The Prompt

As they stood there silently in the darkness, neither of them could have imagined what would happen next. They had found the lantern by chance as they were scouring the streets looking for food. Lying on the cobbled street, waiting to be found, the lantern burnt through the dim light of evening. The boys held it in their hands, watching the orange flame flicker in the breeze.

Without warning, the flame disappeared, as did the two boys!

When the flame reappeared, the boys could not believe where they were …

Bad Hair Day!

TED-Ed - Term 2 Week 7

The contributions of female explorers - Courtney Stephens

During the Victorian Age, women were unlikely to become great explorers, but a few intelligent, gritty and brave women made major contributions to the study of previously little-understood territory. Courtney Stephens examines three women -- Marianne North, Mary Kingsley and Alexandra David-Néel -- who wouldn’t take no for an answer (and shows why we should be grateful that they didn’t).

1. Aside from their beauty, why were Marianne North’s paintings so useful to scientists back in Europe?

2. Women’s fashion of the time was quite restrictive. What fashionable item helped Mary Kingsley when she fell into a pit of thorns?

3. What did Alexandra David-Neel do when she was prevented from crossing the Tibetan border?

4. Can you think of a time that seeing or experiencing something new meant that you could never look at the world in quite the same way again? Explain.

5. Independence takes a lot of courage. Can you think of a time when you were afraid to say or do something that was different than the group, and a time when you were brave enough to ‘march to your own drummer?’ How did each situation feel at the time? How do you feel looking back on them?

The Time Traveller

Where may have been, whether it be into the past or the future?

What are some of the things he has seen and people he has met?

Is he on a mission of some sort? Perhaps, if he is in the past and he changes something significant, it could change the future forever…

If you could travel back in time, would you change anything from your past?

If you could see into the future, what would you like to see yourself doing in 10 years time?

Why do you think the character is ‘plodding’ along? What does that tell you?

The Prompt

The traveller plodded slowly across the long, cobbled bridge. Rain spat from the sky, pounding against the cold road, mist and cloud blocking any sunlight that could brighten the occasion.

He could feel the clock digging into his back as he walked. It went everywhere with him, or rather he went everywhere with it. The clock was the key to everything; the key to moving through time and space. It was what had allowed him to see everything that had been, and everything that had not yet come to pass.

Life as a time-traveller had its benefits, but it also took its toll…

KQ - What language features stand out to you?

The Task: Do you chose to continue the story of the time-traveller? Or does another genre come to mind? i.e. Imagine you have just travelled through time into the past or future. Describe where you have just landed and how you feel.

Extension Activity

Sentence Challenge

Relative clauses… Can you use a relative clause to add extra information to a simple sentence?

E.g. The clock, which he carried with him everywhere, enabled him to travel through time.

The man was tired.

The clock was heavy.

The time traveller looked weary.

Task: Re-craft your writing to include at least 3 relative clauses
