1. As you re-watch The Lorax by Dr. Seuss, list the names of the producers and consumers shown in the movie.

2. What was the land of the Lorax like before the Once-ler arrived? Did it seem like someplace you'd like to live? What parts of your own environment would you be sad to see go?

3. What kind of person is the Once-ler? Why won't he listen to the Lorax? The Lorax says to the Once-ler, "You are crazy with greed." Why does the Lorax say that? Do you agree or disagree?

4. Why does the Lorax speak for the trees? Why is it important to speak up for others? Have you ever spoken up for someone else? Has someone else ever spoken up for you?

5. How does the Once-ler's Thneed business hurt the land of the Lorax? What happens to the Swomee-swans, the Brown Bar-ba-loots, and the Humming-fish? How could things have been different if the Once-ler listened to the Lorax?

6. What do you think the boy hearing the story will do with the Truffula seed that the Once-ler tosses to him? What would you do if you were the boy?

7. Do you think the Lorax and his friends will come back if new Truffula Trees grow? Where do you think they have been?

8. The Once-ler says, "Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not." What does the Once-ler mean? Can one person make a difference? Can you? What are some things you can do to better your own environment?

9. How does the Once-ler feel about what his Thneed business did to the Lorax and friends?

10. Dr. Seuss used bright colors on some pages of the book and dull colors on others. Did you notice this? Why do you think he did that?

Writer's Workshop - Nature Is Speaking (Tuning In)

Nature Is Speaking is Conservation International’s invitation to the human race to listen to nature.

Nature is essential to every aspect of human life and well-being — we want to make sure it’s included in the conversation. People are taking more from nature than it has to give, and as a result, we’re putting our own lives on the line.

Nature’s message to humanity is simple: Nature doesn’t need people. People need nature.

Human beings are part of nature. Nature is not dependent on human beins to exist. Human beings, on the other hand. are totally dependent on nature to exist. The growing number of people on the planet and how we live here is going to determine the future of nature. And the future of us.

Nature will go on, no matter what. It will evolve. The question is, will it be with us or without us?

If nature could talk, it would probably say it doesn’t much matter weither way. We must understand there are aspects of how our planet evolves that are totally out of our control.

But there are things that we can manage, control and do responsible that will allow us and the planet to evolve together. This is simply about all of us coming together to do what needs to be done.

Because if we don’t, nature will continue to evolve. Without us. Here’s to the future. With humans.

Task 1: What force of nature are you?

Mother Nature is calling. Take this quiz (click start) and find out what she thinks about you.

Watch the video that is suggests!

How does this force relate to you? Is it a true reflection of 'who you are'?
What 'sparked' your interest?
What made this video effective?
Pair / Share with your neighbour - What similarities / differences do you share?

STP - Quick Write - Julia Roberts Is Mother Nature

Write a short piece imagining that you are Mother Nature. What would you say to humankind about the issues that exist on Earth today? What advice would you give?

Student Blogging Challenge - Week 4 - My World

Earlier in this set of challenges, we learnt all about you – your interests, your favourite foods, music and lots of other things when you wrote your ‘About’ page. This week we are going to learn all about the area or country in which you live.

When you write your posts or use web 2.0 tools, remember to be internet safe and not give away any personal information. Check with your teacher or parent, to find out if you can mention your school name or town.

But firstly, a few administration points

- I have started deleting students who have only a Hello world post, or have not written a post yet this year or have no avatar post or about me page.

- Please check to make sure you have the following widgets visible on your blog’s sidebar: class blogs, pages (if not in header area), recent comments (10), recent posts (10), blogroll or links, categories. If not using Edublogs, the names of these widgets might be different.

- Are you moderating your comments often? It can be annoying for your mentor to go to your blog and find no comments have been approved for the last month or so.
- In your profile page, do you have your blog URL included? – this links to your name for when you leave a comment.

Categories: You will notice I mentioned having the category widget in your sidebar. This is a way to group your posts eg book reviews, history class, #16stubc for the student blogging challenge. Here is a link to a post about adding categories when using Edublogs orBlogspot where they are called labels.

Now let’s get to the activities.

Activity 1 - Add a widget to find out where your commenters are coming from.

There are many different widgets you can use – clustrmaps, flag counter, feedjit or revolver map. Have you seen any others while visiting blogs of other students? Maybe you could write a post about why you chose the commenter widget you have put on your blog.

Activity 2 - Add one or more widgets about your area of the world
This might include a clock or weather or a translator widget in case students who don’t speak your language can translate your post.

When adding widgets to your sidebar, copy and paste the embed code into a text box on your sidebar. Save then close.

If the widget is too wide, you will have to adjust the number next to ‘width’ in the embed code.
This might appear more than once in the code.

Activity 3 - Write a post about 3 tourist attractions in your country.

Miss W and Mr Davo Devil will be visiting outback New South Wales and outback Queensland for two weeks in April then at the end of June going to Denver, Colorado USA for 10 days. They enjoy looking at historical places and nature. Suggest 3 tourist attractions in your country they would enjoy visiting. Don’t copy and paste, write about them in your own words. Try to make it a personal piece of writing if you have actually been there.

Activity 4 - A year in your town

Write a post, create a glogster, make an audioboo tape, create a Storybird or add a Voki telling Miss W about the festivals held in your town throughout the year. Which festivals do you enjoy the most and why? When are the festivals held in case she can visit one while she is travelling? If under 13, check with your teacher or parent if you want to use a web 2.0 tool rather than writing a post in your blog.

Activity 5 - Visit other participants and ask questions

Visit at least five other blogs from students or classes around the world and ask some questions in your comments.

Activity 6 - Questions in a post

Write a post asking questions about the different countries mentioned in activity 5. Have at least 6 questions in your post.

Activity 7 - Where I would love to visit and why

Write a post or use a web 2.0 tool telling your readers about a place you would love to visit and why. Try to include some hyperlinks (links that are underlined in your post area and take your readers to another website)

Activity 8 - Create a game or quiz about your town, state or country

A few places to do this include: Quiz Revolution, Class Tools, Scratch, Quizlet, Kahoot

Remember to check with your teacher or parent before using these web 2.0 tools. Sometimes your teacher or parent will create an account that is moderated by them and is therefore safe for students to use. Do you know any other places to create games and quizzes?

TED-Ed - Term 1 Week 9

How poachers became caretakers - John Kasaona

In his home of Namibia, John Kasaona is working on an innovative way to protect endangered animal species: giving nearby villagers (including former poachers) responsibility for caring for the animals. And it's working.

1.What would the speaker John Kasaona call himself? A Himba, A conservationist, or a Namibian? Why?

2. According to Kasaona, what has Integrated Rural Development and Nature Consevation (IRDNC) accomplished?

3. What contributed to building a foundation for conservation in Namibia, according to Kasaona?

4. What does Kasaona mean when he refers to the word 'conservancies'?

5. What is the reason Kasaona gives that makes conservation so successful in Namibia?

6. Explain how improving the lives of local communities around the world can alleviate the problems of poaching and lead to conservation efforts of wildlife.

7. Explain how a new economy based on the respect of natural resources in the world can lead to improvements in education and infrastructure.

STP LOI 2 - Personal choices impact the environment (Wonderopolis)

Key Questions:
- Do human beings really have an impact on the natural areas they visit?
- How do the choices humans make impact the natural environment?

- What actions can benefit and/or harm the environment?

Have You Ever Wondered...
- Do you leave a trace?
- How do human activities impact the environment?
- What can you do to minimise your impact on the environment?

Task: Click the image below and then read the text - complete the wonder words and then test your knowledge by completing the comprehension task.

Making Connections - Write a statement / bullet point any connections you can make between the main concepts in this task and the CI and LOI's.

Writer's Workshop - Half Life

WALT: Craft powerful sentences

It had been a time of great change. The humans were to blame.

Their world was disappearing inch by precious inch: a lush, sun-drenched land full of colour and life becoming a barren, ruinous, grey wasteland.

What would become of them all? Was there even a future?

Question time!

- How are the two sides of the picture different?
- Why do you think they are different?
- Is there anything like this happening in our world?
- What do you think it would feel like to be in either place?
- How might the two cities be different?
- What will the people in both cities be like?
- Are there any similarities between the two sides?
- Would it be possible for the grey side to become like the colourful side again?
- What might the different animals be thinking?

Sentence Challenge!

Can you write a sentence that uses an apostrophe for omission?

can not = can’t
I have = I’ve
he will= he’ll
she is= she’s
we have= we’ve
will not = won’t

Can you write a sentence that uses an apostrophe for possession?

E..g. The tree’s leaves.
Sick Sentences!

These sentences are ‘sick’ and need help to get better. Can you help?

The leaves had come of the tree. The grass had gone grey. The sky was grey. Plants had died.

Writer's Workshop - Powerful Openers

WALT: Identify, evaluate and craft powerful opening sentences

Last weekend I went to the beach. We had a lot of fun.

I woke up and looked out the window. It was a beautiful day. When I went downstairs, I said to my wife, ‘Let’s go to the beach today!’

It was only 6:45 am and already the temperature was over 25 degrees. I couldn’t take another day of swimming in my own sweat! There was only one solution. I hollered up the stairs: ‘Hey! Do you fancy going to the beach today?!’

Which was the most effective? Why was it more successful than the others?

Did you know one of the most important things you can do for your story is to write a really strong first line(s) (aka powerful opener)? Think about it. The first line is the very first taste your reader will have of your story. You want to grab the reader’s attention from the very start and make them want to read more.

We hear this over and over! “I don’t know how to get started!”

Today you will explore various ways authors get their stories off and running.

You will notice that you will practice writing your own terrific first lines by using mentor texts as a guide. (Mentor texts are books or stories that can be used as good examples for your own writing.) This is a great way to grow as a writer and to try out different styles.

What did you notice? What did you find interesting?

See how I used the first line from the book, The Young Elites, as inspiration to create our own? It’s a subtle, but really important difference. Copying another author’s lines is not okay (that’s called plagiarism) but being inspired by great writers—and learning from great books—is how every author masters his or her craft.
Time to give it a go!

- Write a ‘powerful opener’ using 3 of the examples
- Extension - Try all 6 =)
- How will you know you are successful?

Here is an example from last year!

1. They're going to kill me, they're really going to kill me.
2. I am Elodie. I am 6 years old. I am an assassin.
3. I'm only going to say this once, so focus.
4. The late fall evening sun fell below the horizon, beyond the ruffled shrubs, which lay silent as the wind tore its leaves and threw them towards the woods, where the most peculiar things lurk in its shadows.
5. Clairvoyance is seeing the future. Many had it, like Abraham Lincoln.
6. "Where are my parents?" I demanded, thinking about the cell trapping me in the damp stone room.
Let's re-craft!

- Select one text that you have previously crafted (HL included)

- Using the examples you have crafted today - Write 3 different beginnings for your text.

- Read your powerful openers to a partner and have the partner pick the beginning that would make them want to read the rest of the text.

Student Blogging Challenge - Week 3 - Free Choice

A note from Miss W:

Because we had two posts last week and I know many students from the northern hemisphere are on Spring Break around this time, I have decided that this week will be free choice.

You might want to:

- Catch up on the posts from the last couple of weeks – about me, avatar, commenting, guidelines, visiting and commenting, earth hour
- Comment on other student or class blogs
- Write your own post about something of your choice – use #16stubc somewhere in the post so I know it relates to the challenge

Students - We are coming up to nearly a month of the challenge and as I mentioned in one of the earlier posts, some students will be taken off the student list over Easter (next weekend) if they have not completed certain activities.

Why do I do this? - We have over 2500 students registered for the challenge but less than half of them get to have a mentor. So if students are not doing the challenge activities I feel they don’t deserve to have a mentor.

Which students will be taken off?
- Students who already have mentors need to have completed the following to be left on the list:
- An about me page or post
- One other post related to the challenge
- Settings on their blog must allow comments to be left by anyone
- The URL of their blog must be correct on the list

Writer's Workshop - A new way to travel

A New Way To Travel!

READ ALL ABOUT IT: Genius Inventor Discovers New Way To Travel!

A new and innovative way to travel has this very week been invented by London based inventor, Samuel Diggle. Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No – it’s the magnificent eco-friendly flying machine ‘Zepper 2016’!

For years, scientists and inventors have been striving to ‘scratch’ the current global ‘itch’ that is sustainable and eco-friendly energy. This could finally be it! Diggle’s new creation is not only cheap to construct, but relies solely upon natural energy sources! When interviewed yesterday morning on national television, Diggle delightedly spoke of his invention: “I believe I really am the most extraordinary man on the planet! My invention will change the way people travel, and change the way the world works. Sustainable energy, reduced carbon emissions and cleaner travel! I’m very proud of myself, and certainly can’t wait to see people using the Zepper2016 in their everyday lives!”

Time will tell whether Diggle’s self-proclaimed brilliance is indeed brilliant, or whether it is, in fact, a load of ‘hot air’!

Task: Can you write your own newspaper article about Samuel Diggle’s new invention? Alternatively, you could write a persuasive leaflet or poster, advertising the Zepper 2016. You could even write a balanced argument: Is the Zepper 2016 better for the World than current modes of transport?

Question Time!

Why has Samuel Diggle designed the Zepper 2016? What global problems was he trying to solve?

Do you think these problems are real? Are we addressing them?

What do you think about the Zepper 2016? Could you see something like this in our skies?

Is it better or worse than what we already have?

What do you think the positives and negatives of the Zepper 2016 are?

Sentence Challenge!

Write a rhetorical question about the Zepper beginning with each of the words below.

Why_______________________________?

What________________________________?

When? ________________________________?

Sick Sentences!

These sentences are ‘sick’ and need help to get better. Can you help?

The Zepper 2016 has a balloon in the middle. It has a shiny ball at the bottom. At the top it has a turbine.

2. Approximately how much oil still exists to be refined and used?

3. When did oil peak in its share of primary energy usage?

4. Which source of energy peaked previous to oil?

5. What energy source is currently the second most used in the world?

6. What forms of energy are almost completely unused in modern times?

- Write a post about what you did in that hour as a family – did you keep your lights off longer than an hour?
- Write a post about the places you want to protect – might be a favourite beach or the Great Barrier Reef or a mountain track you use often or a picnic area you always go to on weekends
- What thing related to climate change would you like to see fixed by all countries around the world by the time you are 50 years old? What could you do to help make that fix?

Writer's Workshop - New World

New World

She had already travelled so far, yet still had so much further to go. This was just the beginning of her journey.

She began today like every other: sitting with her line in the water, hoping to catch a bite for breakfast.

It had been over three weeks since she had seen another person, three weeks since the land had disappeared…

Question time!
- Where do you think the land has gone?

- How will people survive in this ‘water-world’?

- Is there more land or water on Earth?

- Is it better to live in a place with too much water or not enough water?

- What do you think the girl had to drink when she was out at sea?

Sentence challenge!

Which ending would make this word an adverb? - slow

slowness       slowest       slower       slowly

Can you use adverbs in your writing today?

Perhaps you could use adverbs to show the possibility of something happening e.g. perhaps, surely, possibly, maybe.

Perhaps she would find other people soon.

Sick sentences!

These sentences are ‘sick’ and need help to get better. Can you help?

The fish swam through the water. The girl sat on the fish with her fishing rod.

Perfect picture!

Imagine that people could no longer live on land, but had to live in the sea. What would their new home look like? Draw or write down what you have imagined.

WALT: Explore our understanding of the Central Idea

Think your research skills are top-notch? Try A Google A Day!

How does it work? - Google ask's a question - "An 11-foot bird lives less than two miles from 30.891383,-102.885032. What's his name?" - You find the answer

Put your search skills and Google's tools to use - For instance, you can enter 30.891383, -102.885032 right inside the search bar, and learn that it's directly in the center of Ft. Stockton, TX. A quick Search for [Giant bird ft stockton TX] (or perhaps you're the adventurous type who'll "walk" there in Street View) and you'll have your bird: Paisano Pete.

Why is this important? - With more and more of the world's content online, it is critical that we understand how to effectively use a web search to find quality sources appropriate to our tasks.

'A Google A Day' challenge helps you put your research skills to the test!
